Can you give a brief history of your background with Vectorworks?

I started at Vectorworks as the spring public relations intern in January 2018. It was my last semester of college, and I needed one for college credit. Towards the end of my spring session, I was extended for another session for the summer. I really felt like part of the team, especially getting ready for the company’s upcoming launch. About a year after my internship ended, I got a call from my former mentor asking if I was interested in the open PR Coordinator position—of course, I was. I came back full-time in August 2019 as the PR Coordinator working under the same mentor, and it felt like I never left. My main responsibilities involve spearheading and coordinating press interviews, writing press releases, and interacting with the media on behalf of the company. Over the past year and a half, my responsibilities evolved and grew, especially when my manager went on maternity leave last fall. I was put to the test, but I managed to keep everything running smoothly. And as a result, I was promoted to PR Specialist in February 2021.

How has Vectorworks supported your professional and personal growth?

Professionally, I’d say Vectorworks played a pivotal role in me going back to school to get my master’s degree in strategic communications. I will say that I wouldn’t have made this decision without the help of my colleagues. I’ve also improved my editing skills since being at Vectorworks and sharpening my editorial skills. Personally, I would say Vectorworks supports me in growing out of my comfort zone. Everyone is very open and willing to lend a helping hand when needed, and Vectorworks supports me in asking for help when needed and stepping out of the norm to get things done.

Do you feel that your internship with Vectorworks prepared you for your professional career outside of and with Vectorworks?

Yes, 100%. I really like how the internship program is designed for interns to work on projects that you can add to your professional portfolio. By the time I finished my internship, I had many writing pieces to add to my portfolio.

What was a unique thing you experienced during your internship?

I would say the most unique thing I experienced during my internship was the ability to have fun. I really felt like part of the team with social events. Vectorworks has the type of environment where people work hard and diligently, but at the end of the day, they like to celebrate themselves, their hard work, and each other with great food and drinks. I was thrilled to experience this side of Vectorworks during my internship.

How have your responsibilities and skills grown during your time with Vectorworks?

When I first started at Vectorworks as an intern, I was helping with PR tasks and others as assigned. I was always the back up giving support where needed. When I became full-time, I became more involved in PR activities, honing my press pitching, relationship building, and media research skills. Now, I’ve delved deeper into this segment partly because my manager went on maternity leave and I’ve had to step up to take on more responsibility.

How do you think Vectorworks has adapted over the last year to support its customers and employees? Favorite new event/activity?

Vectorworks has developed to really understand their customers' pain points when it comes to their workflows. For example, we held our first-ever virtual Design Day with a live Q&A so viewers could ask their own questions to the executives in addition to on-demand presentations from other customers on how to best improve their workflow with Vectorworks. I thought it was a unique and valuable experience for the customers. Since the pandemic, our employee engagement team has really outdone themselves to keep us all engaged. My new favorite activity has to be the virtual trivia happy hours—when they don’t ask about sports, of course.

What advice would you give to recent grads looking to start their professional career?

Learning doesn’t stop in the classroom. Once you graduate, yes, you know the basics of your field, but there’s still much more you don’t know. My advice is to always keep learning — not just professionally, but personally too. Know your strengths, weaknesses, and your preferred learning and working styles because these will help define your likes and dislikes. I would suggest building professional relationships as much as you can because those are really going to help you whenever you feel stuck and don’t really know what to do—and believe me, those times will definitely come.
